Red: A Bold Twist on Nostalgia & Classics
The SS25 runways were filled with bold, unapologetic reds. While this shade dominated the catwalks, its evolution is what truly stands out. Red is no longer confined to one-dimensional expressions, it’s transforming in unexpected ways. We’re seeing red not only in head-to-toe looks but also in expressive prints, ombres, unique yet familiar color pairings, and red shifting into brownish hues. Traditional patterns and textures are being modernized and refreshed through red, making it more versatile than ever before.
Red has always had its moments in fashion, but its new versatility is where its future lies. Designers are evolving beyond red’s traditional boldness, making it more nuanced and dynamic.
RED AND YELLOW, RED AND YELLOW:
Current Red Pairings on the Catwalk… Is this because of the Deadpool/Wolverine movie? Or maybe Taylor Swift’s spotlight on the Kansas City Chiefs? I don’t know, but I do know it was everywhere this runway season!
In SS25, red paired with yellow and yellowed tans was a standout combination, bringing warmth, energy, and playfulness to the runway. Of course, some designers went the more traditional route with red and pink—which is always a winner—but the red and yellow pairings, whether bold, pastel, or yellow-tan, felt fresh and inviting. It made red more accessible and versatile, softening what is usually a dominant color with complementary and contemporary tones.
This combination continued to reflect influences from sports, nostalgia, and optimism. The fusion of these colors brings a sense of playfulness and carefree expression, while maintaining sophistication, appealing to the modern consumer who seeks both freedom and polish in their wardrobe. Evolving the preppy trend that's long been dominant in streetwear, skate, and sportswear.
Texture, Lace, and Print:
Adding Depth to 'Traditional' in More Aspects than One
This is my favorite area where red is evolving. It’s not just about the color or tone, it’s about how red is elevated through fabrication and prints. Lace, plaids, jacquards, polka dots, roses, and camos, these traditional concepts are being reimagined in red. Red itself, as a primary color, is familiar and timeless, but the excitement comes when these traditional elements interact to create a contemporary design.
Think of the rules of math: two negatives cancel each other out to create a positive. The same formula applies here. Brands are looking back at history, cultural influences, and even their own brand DNA, bringing familiar elements into a contemporary space. They’re tweaking these concepts just enough to feel new. Red, combined with these traditional prints and textures, becomes a multi-dimensional player. It blurs the line between feeling like something you’ve seen before and something entirely new… that’s the magic: - x - = +.
These elements allow red to transition from a bold visual to a tactile experience, offering new ways for people to interact with this classic color.
Ombre Effects:
Ombre, ombre, ombre… It has SATURATED both the market and the runway at this point, but somehow it never feels old. It’s such a great way to make color more wearable and versatile, allowing for a playful yet approachable look.
Ombre allows red to transform gradually, making it adaptable. It was prominent on the runways, offering brands the ability to soften red’s intensity while maintaining its impact. Ombre will continue to be a defining feature in future seasons, with red shifting across tones in a single product, adding visual depth and intrigue. The most exciting use of ombre is when it highlights silhouette shapes and style lines. Red done this way will feel fresh and impactful.
New Shades of Red: From Bold to Subdued
Finally, red’s evolution isn’t just about how it’s styled, it’s about the new shades emerging. Muted two-tone reds and rich brown-reds are becoming key players, offering brands more range to experiment with. Where the past pairing of dark red with bright red felt limiting, these toned-down shades bring new life to the concept, making red feel more grounded and seasonless.
Red is no longer just a bold, attention-grabbing color. It’s evolving into a versatile and multi-dimensional force and could remain not only relevant but essential for the seasons to come.
Evolving Red Combinations for 2026/27
Looking ahead, I see red moving into more tetrad color pairings or split complementary combinations. Red will be paired with brownish reds alongside blue-greens and teal tones. Whether yellow will continue as a key player is unclear, but it doesn’t show signs of slowing down, especially in its pastel and neutral shades. Yellow may take a backseat to teals but will still play a role in adding energy to these evolving palettes.
Expect red and purple to shine across genders, with army greens and yellows balancing out the playful, tonal pairings. These combinations bring a new complexity to red, allowing it to blend seamlessly with nature-inspired tones. The evolving pairings will push the boundaries of red, making it feel both sophisticated and adventurous, not just one or the other.
